Mr. Greg’s Reptile Roadshow
Live Reptile – Birthday Parties
1. How many children do you suggest to attend the party?
I prefer to limit invitees (children) to 16 or fewer. This allows for the children to touch many of the reptiles. If more attendees are invited, the children will only be able to touch a few of the reptiles due to time constraints and my desire to show as many reptiles as possible in the given time.
2. How many reptiles are included: 30 minute program? 45 minute program? 1 hour program?
The number of reptiles can vary but I do not charge per reptile. I get through as many reptiles as possible in the time allotted. In a 30 minute program I can usually present about 8 reptiles, 10 or 11 in a 45 minute program and 12 or so, plus arachnids, if requested in a 1 hour program.
3. Are spiders and scorpions included?
I usually offer arachnids for 1 hour programs but only if a parent wants to have them for their son or daughter’s birthday party program.
4. How does a live reptile birthday party work?
I bring the live reptiles to your location for the program. The reptiles are secured in plastic boxes and the children cannot see what is in the boxes until the beginning of the program. I use a piece of material that the birthday celebrity and I sit on, on the floor. The attendees sit around the material so they are very close to the animals. Animals are removed from the boxes, one at a time and with the help of the birthday party celebrity, each reptile is handled. The party invitees are able to touch the reptiles (two finger touch) but only the birthday celebrity is able to hold them.
5. How much space is required for a live reptile program?
Not very much at all. Due to Mr. Greg, the birthday celebrity and the invitees sitting on the floor, very little open space is required. The animal boxes are stackable and the material I use to protect carpets and floors is about 5 ft square. The party guests sit around the material and the furniture is reserved for any adults that may want to stay for the reptile program.
6. How safe is it for children to touch the reptiles?
Very safe! The reptiles I use for birthday parties are extremely tolerant of handling and touching and they are habituated to being handled during reptile programs.
7. Are the children likely to get germs from touching the live reptiles?
Not likely but I do take precautions and advise youngsters that after touching the first live reptile, they cannot put their hands in their mouths or anywhere around their face. If I see a child doing this, they are reminded of the no face contact rule. At the end of every program, I provide hand sanitizer and make certain that every child and adult that has touched reptiles gets their hands clean.
8. What ages are appropriate for the live reptile birthday party?
Usually age 4 and up. At age 4, most children will keep their hands out of their mouths when told to do so. I will work with 3 year olds in certain situations but usually in pre-K situations where 3 year olds are not permitted to touch or in situations where 3 year olds are in the later part of that age year.
9. Can children touch the reptiles?
Yes. The birthday celebrity can hold many of the reptiles and guests are allowed to touch using the “two-finger” touch method.
10. What types of reptiles are used in the presentation of reptiles?
A big variety of reptiles are used in birthday party programs. Baby American alligator, lizards including a very large iguana or monitor lizard and numerous snakes with each party terminating with a large constrictor, usually an albino Burmese python. See the “critter” tab on the website for photographs of the animals used for programs.
